Understanding Shoe Size Variations Across Brands

The Challenge of Consistent Sizing

When shopping for shoes, one of the most common frustrations is the variation in sizing between different brands. Even with the same foot length, the recommended shoe size can differ, making it tricky to find the perfect fit.

Comparing Shoe Sizes Across Brands

We conducted a study comparing the recommended shoe sizes for different foot lengths across the shoe brands Nike, Adidas, Under Armour, New Balance, Asics, Vans, Puma, Sketchers, Salomon, On Running and Hoka. The results were quite revealing, as shown in the graph below:

The graph illustrates the EU shoe sizes based on foot length in centimeters (cm) recommended by the brands on their websites.

Key Insights from the Data

  1. Variation in Sizing: As the graph shows, the difference in recommended shoe sizes increases with foot length. For shorter foot lengths (around 22-24 cm), the variation is relatively small but still significant, with differences exceeding 1.5 sizes even at these lower lengths. For longer foot lengths (above 26 cm), the difference becomes even more pronounced.
  2. Impact on Returns: This inconsistency is a significant factor in the high rate of returns for online shoe purchases. Customers often find that the size they ordered, based on their foot length, does not fit as expected because sizing standards vary between brands.
  3. Need for Accurate Sizing Information: To reduce the likelihood of returns and improve customer satisfaction, it's crucial for consumers to be aware of their specific size for each brand. Accurate size charts and recommendations based on foot measurements can make a big difference.

Reducing Returns: Tips for Consumers

  • Measure Your Feet: Measure your feet before purchasing new shoes, and refer to the specific brand's size chart.
  • Check Reviews: Look for customer reviews that mention sizing. Often, other customers will note if a brand runs large or small.
  • Consult Brand Guidelines: Many brands provide detailed fitting advice and tools on their websites.
